Harper's Ferry

Rail Fan Hot Spot

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, is a unique and scenic spot for railfans, where two important CSX lines converge. The former B&O double-track main line (now CSX’s Cumberland Subdivision) connects Washington, D.C., to Pittsburgh, while the single-track Shenandoah Subdivision heads south to Strasburg, Virginia. These lines meet within a tunnel across the Potomac River in Maryland, emerging to cross the river into West Virginia on separate trestles. This scenic arrangement allows visitors to witness various trains, from freight to passenger, moving through a historic setting.

With around 25-30 scheduled CSX trains, weekday MARC commuter trains, and Amtrak’s Capitol Limited on the main line, along with coal, grain, and ethanol trains, there’s plenty of activity to enjoy. The Shenandoah Subdivision also sees several stone trains to Millville and occasional trips to Winchester. Popular train-watching spots include the Amtrak/MARC station platform in Harpers Ferry National Historic Park for views of trains exiting the tunnel and the south bank of the Potomac River for capturing both trestles. For morning views of eastbound trains, the climb to Maryland Heights offers a spectacular vantage point, although the trail is steep and parking is limited. Beyond railfanning, Harpers Ferry offers rich historical attractions, hiking trails, and river activities, making it a top destination for both railfans and tourists alike.
